We want to help your child develop number sense. You may ask, "What does that mean?" Here are a few of the key concepts that are essential to developing number sense (www.ncld.org).
- Ranking - in the number line such as "higher than", "lower than", or "equal to"
- Comparison - evaluating features and making a judgment of some sort
- Magnitude - how one thing (or amount) compares to another of the same kind in terms of size or rank
- Measurement - associating a physical quantity (i.e., length, weight) with a unit that describes it (i.e., inch, pound)
- Estimation - finding a result even though it may be imprecise or incomplete
- Subitizing - recognizing how many there are of something
